Alexandra Mill wins at 2015 LABC Building Excellence Awards Grand Final

The housing development of Alexandra Mill in Hebden Bridge, was awarded the title of Best Small New Housing Development at the Grand Final of the LABC Building Excellence Awards – one of the most recognised events on the building industry’s calendar.

A panel of industry experts – judged a list of the highest quality projects from around England and Wales to reward the best in technical innovation, sustainability and design. The scheme provides ten striking waterside homes with a private courtyard, designed to respect the existing materials and character of the original cotton mill. The Environment Agency was involved with the creation of the layout, due to the potential flood risk. The judges were highly impressed by the well-designed small development.

LABC Chief Executive Paul Everall said: “The location and its attendant flood risk required a bespoke design solution that has been achieved very successfully. The internal layout of the dwellings also takes advantage of the opportunities to provide views and light for the residents. There was a good and professional relationship with building control and all parties agreed that the development has positively enhanced the area.”

“Our building excellence awards are an opportunity for the trade to celebrate good practice. Our winners demonstrate how positive working relationships with local council building control teams achieve high quality, sustainable buildings. Our awards are unique because they recognise how this cooperation improves building standards and professionalism across the industry” The Grand Final of the LABC Building Excellence Awards took place on Tuesday 10 November 2015 at the Lancaster in London and was hosted by comedian and impressionist, Jon Culshaw, best known for his work on Dead Ringers. Over 650 building industry professionals including contractors, architects and engineers attended the celebration to find out which projects won across the 14 hotly contested categories.
