Skipton Based Developer buys Cononley Mill Site

DEVELOPERS have bought a mill site in Cononley with the intention of redeveloping it with housing and possible commercial use.

Skipton-based Candelisa says it intends to work closely with the community on its plans to redevelop Green’s Mill, off Cononley Lane.

The company, which exchanged contracts with the Green family last week, initially wants to convert the mill building next to the road and adjacent to the railway level crossing into apartments, which would include recessed balconies.

After that, it will consider a mixed residential and commercial use of the six-acre site.

A further possibility is the creation of a pedestrian route at the far end of the site, which would mean rail passengers from the village being able to bypass the often closed level crossing to catch a Leeds or Bradford-bound train.

Managing director Guy Taylor said a condition on purchase with the Green family, which has strong ties with Cononley, was that they engage fully with the community.

“We are looking at proposals for the whole site, but it would be an evolving development,” he added.

The site, which is still partially occupied, is on the Skipton side of the level crossing and is included in the emerging Craven Local Plan as ‘mixed use housing and employment site’.

Mr Taylor said current tenants at the site were aware of the proposals and many would relocate in the Aire Valley.

Cononley Parish Council chairman, Cllr Lois Brown, said she believed villagers would generally support development of the site rather than any other new locations in the area.

The parish council is progressing its own neighbourhood plan, in which the site is earmarked for preferred development.

“We would support development of a sort and, within reason, it would be great for housing, with the train station nearby, the primary school and shops,” she said.

Ward councillor, Patrick Mulligan, said the village had seen a lot of unwanted development, but that this site is one that has actually been allocated for housing.
